I just finished reading this book, which was written by a Saudi woman, based on stories of her girl friends in Saudi Arabia. This book was definitely fun reading and maybe even truthful to some extent, but definitely sensationalistic. Girls of Riyadh, or (Banat Al-Riyadh) as it is better known in the Arab world is quite frankly, one of most intriguing books I have ever read so far. Girls of Riyadh (بنات الرياض) is an Arabic novel written by a young Saudi female author about four girls living in the capital of Saudi and their attempts to find love in there. The title of this book is taken from the famous Saudi singer, Abdul Majeed Abdullah's song, 'Girls of Riyadh, O girls of Riyadh'. Girls of Riyadh tells the story of four college-age high class friends in Saudi Arabia, girls looking for love but stymied by a system that allows them only limited freedoms and has very specific expectations and demands. Girls of Riyadh is an inside peek into the lives of these four educated University students and the book unfolds as a series of e-mails sent out to a yahoogroup, chronicling the events from the lives of each girl. Running on an Arabian-tale high, I picked this one up after reading Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia, and Girls balanced the weighty after-effects of Princess quite well.
